Wine of the day: Eric Texier Cotes du Rhone Villages (Chusclan) – 2005
There are 18 different “Villages” appellations in the Southern Rhone that make up Côtes du Rhône Villages wines. These diverse wines come from a variety of small vineyards, each with their own character and history. I love to taste a variety of Villages wines side by side to develop an understanding of the difference in terroir between each one. It’s quite amazing how much a little clicks of latitude and different soil type will make on grape ripeness and inevitably wine structure and complexity.
The wine of the day comes from Eric Texier, a well known producer from around the Rhone. This 2005 from the Chusclan appelation is very soft on the palate with red fruits that are peaking at the moment. The finish has some tart cherry and mineral notes, but from start to finish the wine is elegant and a real treat. At around $20, you can’t go wrong here. Outstanding value and just a pleasure to drink.
Keep your eye out for Côtes du Rhône Villages and start keeping notes on the subtle differences between each- you’ll really be surprised at the diversity and quality of the wines of these 18 appellations.

At some point I’d love to tour the Rhone valley, sample wines and explore the interesting countryside!
