Beer of the Day: Brewery Ommegang’s Witte
By Greg B. I know this is out of season, but I have a surplus of these beers after the most recent Gregtoberfest/Jertag IV, so I’ve been drinking a few of them a week trying to bring down the numbers! Brewery Ommegang is one of the US premier Belgian styled/inspired breweries. From their delicious Abbey Ale to their Three Philosopher’s beer, they make some of the best Belgian styled beers here in America (their only rival, I think, might be Allagash brewery, but they compete on slightly different levels). A witte beer is a ‘white’ beer, just like a hefeweizen if a weisse beer (white beer), this particular beer is a mix of the Belgian witte style and American wheat.
The beer pours a clear, very light golden/pale straw color, with minimal head foaming up if poured aggressively, then receding quickly to a very thin level on the top of the beer. Aggressive carbonation can be seen in the glass. Lighter Belgian yeast, with some citrus on the nose are the main aromas. To taste, the beer is acidic, cold, refreshing. The carbonation shows up soft in the body, and the taste has a low citrusy, yeasty flavor, with the yeast more prevalent on the finish. Served cold, it’s a refreshing beer, something to quaff in large quantities, gatherings, parties. In the summertime it’s especially delicious. A nice mix between the more dry American wheat beers and the medium bodied Belgian wheat beers, though certainly not Ommegang’s best beer, and probably the least impressive in their beer lineup. If a brewery’s least impressive is like this, you can bet your bottom dollar their other beers are phenomenal. 3.2/5, 5.1% abv.

I’ve tried this beer and it’s definitely something that quite refreshing during the hot weather seasons!
