Beer of the Day: Brasserie Dupont’s Foret Saison
By Greg B. Brasserie Dupont has some interesting beers. While I have not thought every one of them was amazing, I really do appreciate their classic styles, their saison actually is amazing, and their moinette is a confounding beer of epic (and delicious) proportions. This time I was in the mood for a quick beer, something in the same genre as the saison Dupont but still different. So I saw on the shelf Dupont’s Foret Saison, and asked no more questions, I picked it up and brought it home for my post-dinner out in the sun-contemplating the universe beer. Turns out, it’s not as complex as I wanted.
The beer pours a hazy golden color with a large pillowy white head. It has a large and nice lacing on the glass as it recedes, which is expected of this beer. It smells tart and slighty fruity with almost a winey aroma as well. There is a little of that saison horse blanket aroma to boot, which is very promising for the beer I wanted for the evening. The taste is earthy and tart with a dry fruity finish, but honestly the beer seems kind of ‘meh’, there’s not enough power for a saison, it’s very very very mild/meek on the flavor and does not follow with the aroma. This is an all organic or sustainably grown beer which is commendable, but I worry that folks will drink it for it’s ‘planet saving’ power and not for flavor, because that’s what I got from the beer. 7.5% abv, 2.3/5
