Beer of the Day: Gueuze Girardin 1882
By Greg B. Delicious. I could probably leave it at that, and it would be enough of a review. This beer is amazing and you should probably go out and give it a shot (if you like gueuze, that is. if you haven’t tried this style yet, try this. It’s the best one out there). I know I’ve been review a fair number of gueuze beers recently, but I’m glad to have found this one. This must have been masterfully blended, between young lambic and old, the sour and youthful fruit are perfectly paired. But I’ll get into that in a minute.
This beer pours a hazy dull orange color with a fluffy extremely white head forming which recedes at a medium pace and left no lacing. Great, indication that this may be a very dry beer! The aroma is awesome, fresh cut apples and some of the barnyard funk right up front but matched so nicely that neither of these aromas is overwhelming. To taste, I wish I bought a bigger bottle. 375ml is alright, but next time, I’ll step it up to the 750ml! The flavor changes as you drink it. Initially there are more fruity sour apple flavors, but as you sip more and deeply the funk comes through in a tart/sour delicious flavor. It finishes very dry and though I didn’t pair this with any foods, I’d expect it to be excellent with almost everything you’d want to try to eat it with! 4.0/5, 5%abv
Try this beer with: Sausages, cured meats, pork products, hearty salads or drink a glass just for the hell of it, it’s excellent!
