Beer of the Day: Pyramid Brewing co. Thunderhead IPA
By Greg B. Again, for whatever reason, I cannot give up trying new Pyramid beers! Despite the last two having a general ‘meh‘ reaction, I saw an IPA and wanted to see what Pyramid brewery would do for this. With some IPAs, you can hide some off flavors/aromas behind some mega hops, so maybe this one would be good? So, I got a good mixed 6-pack in the store and headed home to stash the beer in the fridge, while I bid my time for when I’d want to try a new IPA.
The beer pours a translucent honey gold color, with a medium and foamy white head. It provides a decent lacing on the glass, no doubt because of whatever extra proteins are in the beer giving it the little bit of cloudiness that makes it translucent. The beer smells more fruity than hoppy on the nose, but definitely has a little citrus and possibly even some pine on the aroma! Off to a good start. The taste is kind of mellow, with a little hint of bitters at the end, though they are almost harsh for being so non-existent. The beer has a full bodied feel in the mouth, which is nice and is actually surprisingly refreshing for as solid a mouthfeel as it commands. I might be willing to call this an unfiltered pale ale, but I don’t think this can compete in an category with almost any other IPA I’ve tried, so if you’re a hop head, you wont enjoy this IPA. As the beer warms, the bitterness at the finish vanishes, leaving a malty finish, which is quite odd actually. 2.0/5, 6.7% abv
Try this beer with: not-to-spicy Mexican or Indian cuisine (Not too spicy b/c the beer has not that much bitters).
