Review: A Visit To The New Punk’s Backyard Grill in Annapolis: Good prices, great food, backyard ambiance
By Michael Mohammadi (editing and photos by Greg B)
Imagine a place where the weather is always warm, there is no rain or snow and you can enjoy grilled meats, seafood, and veggies as if you were in the comfort of your own backyard. There are trees, a white picket fence, and a brick wall that’s reminiscent of the side of your home. There are even awnings and umbrella’s in case the weather turns south. Sound good? Well imagine no more because last week marked the opening of Punk’s Backyard Grill in Annapolis, MD.
Set in the Annapolis shopping center, Punk’s Backyard Grill is a comfortable setting that is very loft-esque (think NYC style) but with a touch of a suburban backyard. The casual feeling of it all is highlighted by the ordering stations, self-serve soda machine and very laid-back atmosphere. Don’t let the chain-restaurant feel fool you though, Punk’s is grilling up some fantastic and flavorful meats and seafood.
As far as menu goes, don’t expect BBQ- there are no ribs, smoked brisket, or wings. There is a delicious pulled pork sandwich that includes a pile of moist cole slaw which adds both mouth watering juiciness and crunchy textures, though the bun could use an upgrade (something like a potato roll, a little more moist?). Different platters of skewers are available which are perfectly grilled and definitely a very healthy option for dining out. Medium sized portions of either lamb, shrimp or chicken came out tender and well seasoned. The Flat Iron steak skewer was a highlight, with a touch of spice that is well balanced by a homemade tatziki sauce. Served with accompanying sauces and pita bread, the skewers make for a great lunch.

For those looking for a hot dog or Brat, check out their list of grilled sausages which offers a few different options. We tried the Andouille sausage which was juicy with a little bit of heat (the flavor kind, it was served hot so don’t worry!) and covered with grilled veggies, served on a roll. I can imagine, if we had gotten the Brats instead, smothering the sausage with some spicy mustard, and while my mouth is watering just thinking about this, I’ll have to wait until I’m in the area again.

Punk’s also offers a variety of great side dishes- from a baked Mac N’ Cheese with white cheddar to a cold corn and black bean salad which tasted very fresh and was a nice contrast to the other warmer, salty flavored foods. It really cooled the mouth and cleaned the palate between bites of the different items we ordered!

Other great options are the freshly baked seasonal pies, a small but well thought out kids menu and a beer and wine selection that goes very well with the cuisine. We loved their homemade key lime pie- light with the perfect balance of tart and sweet to cleanse the palate.
My only criticism of Punk’s is their portion size. While the prices are great (with nothing over $10), it might take two different skewers and two side items to fill up a hungry adult, especially for dinner. This being said, however, the portions, price and atmosphere make this a very nice place to go grab a bite to eat for lunch or even enjoy an early or smaller dinner.

All in all, Punk’s Backyard Grille is a great concept that is sure to do great. The food is very good, especially from a health standpoint, the service was great and the prices were right. If you’re heading out to the Annapolis Mall I highly recommend making your way over to Punk’s Backyard Grilled for a delicious meal that won’t weigh you down. Especially as we wait for spring to arrive to dust off our grills at home, Punk’s offers a chance at a beautiful spring day at a suburban backyard BBQ!

After eating that 180,000 scoville unit hot sauce with lunch, I wish I had that black bean/corn salad to cool off my tongue!
Greg…not to call you a sissy or anything…but 180,000?
I have a hot sauce at the house called “Da Bomb- The Final Answer” which rolls in at 1,500,000 Scoville Units…
Oh…and to cool of the tongue you’d be better off with the Keylime pie
Anything that references the “final solution’ in a food product/hot sauce scares me. And I’m not afraid to admit it!
But you’re right, the key lime pie would have been a nice thing to eat, rather than the rest of my spicy burrito!
