Prohibition Repeal Day
By Greg B. So, Repeal day came and went a few weeks ago. And it was a great day. Never before (or again, I suspect) will the value of a nickel be so high. At Kooper’s in Fells point, $.05 could buy you a beer. And not just any beer, a Clipper city ale, in a firkin, at the bar. What more could a man want?
Basically, the evening consisted of drinking 5 cent beers and eating oysters. The oysters were free, so I tipped generously to those who were shucking them out on the street. At some point we did switch over to beer on tap, after the firkin was finished. I tried a Jinx ale, from Magic Hat. This beer had a dark brown head that was very minimal. Smells of chocolate malts and tastes like chocolate malts. Nice mild flavor though, good carbonation. I approve of you all drinking and trying this beer.
Holy Sheet is a beer produced by Clipper City in a Belgian style. It’s definitely a great beer, smells sweet and malty. Has a great body with some sugars and a taste of alcohol on the sip. Has even a berry-ish taste/aroma to it which is rather pleasant. This came in a bottle, but I wish I could get it on tap!
Peg Leg Stout - This was also of Clipper City brewery, and something I’ve rated many times before. It’s recently been added to the beer list at Sotto Sopra here in Baltimore, and is one heck of a brew. Creamy and malty with chocolate and toffee aromas, it’s a great winter beer. Search the website for more reviews of it!
After this, we headed to the wharf rat where I waited for over 10 minutes to get a beer, despite not being crowded. I then sat at the table, and was fortunate enough to have Jeremy there to provide a beer, since he is far more patient than I am. After this, I headed home, glad to have been able to partake in an annual celebration of a rare occurrence: the re-instatement of a basic human right, the right to consume alcohol.
