Just a quick note about the September 2007 article that I came across while researching food and wine pairings for white Chateauneuf du Papes – - – you stated that Chateauneuf du Pape translates as the “new chateau of the Pope”. I’m an amateur linguist, and I believe it translates as the “ninth” (neuf) Chateau. If it were the “new” Chateau, the French word is Nouveau.
Hi J.A. Man! Thanks for coming by. I do not speak French, so I get my info from websites such as wikipedia which states:
“Châteauneuf-du-Pape translates as “New Castle of the Pope” and, indeed, the history of this commune and its wine is firmly entwined with papal history.”
This is common amongst any wine site as well!
A agree that a direct translation would require “Nouveau”…but it appears in this case it’s understood that it is “new”!
Cheers
